It is the fifth novel published by the English writer Wilkie Collins, written in 1859. It is considered among the first detective novels and is also considered one of the first and most sophisticated "sensational novels" literature. It is considered an early example of mystery literature, as the hero, Walter Hartright, uses many of the spy techniques used in later detective literature. In 2003, Robert McCrum of The Observer placed this novel at number 23 in the "100 Greatest Novels of All Time", and it was placed at number 77 in the BBC's survey entitled The Big Read
