A tragic play by the English writer William Shakespeare. The play consists of five acts, set between Venice and Cyprus. It is believed to have been written in 1603 and is inspired by an Italian story entitled "The Moorish Captain" written by Cinthio, a student of Giovanni Boccaccio. The entire play revolves around four main characters: Othello, the Moorish general in the Venetian army, his wife Desdemona, Lieutenant Cassio, Othello's assistant, and the hypocritical standard-bearer Iago. The themes of the play vary between racism, love, jealousy, and betrayal.
